Sometimes i go through a weekend not watching tv, not reading news. Like this weekend. So when i opened the newspaper this evening, it came as a complete shock to me. Only a week ago on Dutch tv there was a documentary on Gerard Reve, which i enjoyed watching. I havne't read all his books. But i do remember starting toread 'Nader tot u' in the airplane on my way to London, as i write here: http://www.lfs.nl/greymatter/archives/00000052.html
I might be more influenced by Reve than i realise, more by friends than by having read the books. Its a pity there is no 'U' in english, the polite form of 'you'. ('Sie' in german.) I always enjoy using that word. It creates distance, but when i do, its used intimate. You should honour the people closest to thee.

It's hard to define typical scritti. From the post-punk late seventies, to the lush synthesizer mid eighties, to the hiphop late nineties to the guitar pop of now. Ofcourse i don't know what the finished album will be like, only been to 2 live gigs, which might deviate from it.
After that, uhm, yeah, if you do like Boom Boom Bap, there are more gems like that! There are only 5 albums up untill now: Songs to Remember (82), Cupid & Psyche (85), Provision (88), Anomie & Bonhomie (99), Early (05 - songs from the 78-81 time). Cupid & Psyche is an absolute classic, if you don't know that music, your life is not complete. :-) The Word Girl is great, Woodbeez, Absolute, A little knowledge.
Personally i love Songs to Remember, especially 'The Sweetest Girl'. Brushed with oil, Dusted with powder from Anomie & Bonhomie is another of my favourites. And i also like Skank Bloc Bologna and PA's from the Early compilation.
I'd say go and find some stuff!

its starts small, excited but determined in its initial pulse out write-ways, return... return. the period... monitoring? it picks up a knowledge of its self, in rhyme with it's before. as it grows in confidence it has a dense white clarity, a thick oneness with itself!!! which it grows and holds... for ever in its memory whilst 'it' is. but maybe it becomes bored in this clarity recognising its repetition... or over extends its desire or power to one-ify(?)... which ever, from then on an unhappiness is apparent...but it goes on, bravely weaning itself off the fat white milk of clarity... always returning, till it regains its modesty and with it the search. hoorraaghgh

The technology behind is actually related to the previous one, using multi dimensional arrays to control the grid of movieclips. As always, adding a little bit of animation at the end works wonders. Its a pleasure working on these kind of things, and even more so when you just happen to stumble on something which almost looks magical.

The gig at the Luminaire was a very personal gig I think, Green was even a bit anxious and you could see and hear this. This makes the experience a lot more personal than those gigs where musicians are only doing their 'routines'. Therefore this was such a memorable gig. Very emotional.
I think I can relate to this whole thing. Lovin' music, the need to stop performing live because of panic attacks.
Looking forward to hear the new songs...

I was way to nervous to go for the picture together with Green. Some other people did, boy, do i envy them. But in the end Marco, Ernst and myself did talk with Green for a short bit. Ernst bought him a guinness, clever guy!
All in all, it was such a unique experience. Once in a lifetime. I probably will see them again, either in London or here in Holland. Yeah, there might be a short european tour. The Melkweg in Amsterdam was mentioned, good news! I'm really happy i went to this gig, which was introduced as a live rehearsal. There were some technical glitches, some songs obviously still in need of polishing.
After only one listen i can't comment on the quality of the songs, i'm not a technical listener anyway. I can only say, i liked it. A lot. Can't wait to hear the album, which probably will sound different from the live show, as it should.
OK, time for me to go to bed, catch up on my sleep. I'm completely worn out. But happy!

I used Photoshop. The plain brush, with mode on 'exclusion'. One of my favourites, you paint with complimentary (is that a word?) colours, and when you paint over another colour, it changes into its complimentary colour too. Gives a lot of colour and continually changes while you work on it.
You should, ofcourse, stop when the pictures done. That takes some practice and is very hard to pinpoint.

Its not like a have a perfectly formed idea in my head and than make a present. Most of the times i'm not sure why i do something, i'm interested in technical details, like for example in this present everything is actionscripted, but also tha mindmaps i made over the past few months. I throw some things in the mix and see what comes out of it.
So 'problems haunting you' is a valid option, 'wanting too much' might be another, or 'loosing sight on your problems'.
I had an idea for a variation, maybe i'll finish that tonight, for a completely different meaning! :-)

Oh oh oh, love these organisational listmaking mindmapping tools! Made this using the opensource Freemind, http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page, its a bit buggy, doesn't feel like a real mac program, but it does the job. In a way.
So here it is, my nowhere near conclucive made in an hour mindmap. I should look into this one, there might be some deep psychological insight in it somewhere, who knows! ;-)

Getting interested in javascript again, but i do need to dig kinda deep, its been years. Really rusty. So this is as basic as you can get, and i don't know if it works in IE. It does in Firefox and Safari on the mac, only Safari doesn't show background colours for the input fields. Should get the lowdown on that, noticed before Safari doesn't do css on form elements.

I have been receiving advertisments offering to sell me stationary embossed with gold ribbons celebrating the 10th anniversary of my site, which did start in primitive form in 1995 (and never moved much beyond that). But, except for a few photo albums at LGrossman.com/pics/ and a page I maintain for a local community organization, I have not kept up my pages or added anything new lately.
I miss the challenge and freedom of writing my almost monthly Modemjunkie essay. I have written a couple of pieces for my Ordinary Potato series, but haven't disciplined my self to post more. Trying to get the courage to post some of my poetry, but that seems too naked.
Congratulations on keeping at it... even those days when you find a find a fresh way to present some of your old presents are refreshing.

I was - and probably will be again - in a more reflective mood than usual. And at times i like to write and throw in some lyrics i hear at the moment.
And an afterthought, i like the 5 days a week thing. It works best for me. Which doesn't mean that at times it feels like a burden, but that comes with the territory. All in all, i love making presents!

To be honest, this present is a bit vague to me, i had some alcohol in my system. By the looks of it, it means something to me, but i don't know what...
Which makes me think of last night, i fell asleep on the couch, and once i woke up and got into bed, i remember being really awake. At one point, and i'm not sure ireally did happen like that, i feel from lying awake straight into a dream, but it was a lucid dream, in which i was conscious of dreaming. I remember writing my name a couple of times, i remember walking on a street and meeitng other people, thinking, 'those people are dreaming and i'm awake'.
It feels very far away now, and i'm not sure it actually did happen. But i do have the feeling it did...

I did want to use the Dutch word 'strafwerk', which means the punishment you get at school, for example write 100 lines 'I may not make ugly faces.' I couldn't find a decent translation, so i settled for 'homework'. I like the 'work' part of the word.

A rarity, this one. Never done a 'music video' before. When i have these imaginary conversations, or interviews (yeah, i got those :P ), i let people ask me why there is hardly any sound on my website. I always answer something like "i don't make music', i don't play an instrument', 'too easy'.
So as an exception, a big flash music video! I got the idea walking home from the gym, the idea of drawing, frame-by-frame animation, things that are scattered throughout my work. Halfway i realised this song from Bloc Party would fit nicely, and, bonus, its a free demo you can actually download from their website (www.blocparty.com).
I started at half past eight, but had to play with Muis in between a bit. I cheated near the end, copied all the frames i had done sofar - i was halfway - pasted it at the end and reversed the order.
I probably could have worked on it tomorrow evening as well, but i did kinda like the reversal, and anyway, its a sketch. So done in three hours, here's my music video!

Glad you like this one, got a soft spot for it myself. Such a relief sometimes, something not moving. This is actually done within strict bounds, almost all shapes are only three points, with only two of them with bezier-curves. The very small shapes are only two points, both with bezier-curves.

Completed presents with images in the database, which are the ones i really like myself. I had only done about one third, so this evening i had to go through the rest of them.
Some cringy stuff in there, ouch. Needless to say, but i do it anyway, that stuff is NOT getting an image.
Also, i did stop quite a lot, didn't remember that at all...

Try putting the htaccess file in your images folder or the folder with the files you want to restrict access to rather than the root. But in all honesty, I haven't a clue ;)

Like i said yesterday, you never know when an idea hits you. This time it was waking up a lot during the night with all this music in my head, and somewhere inbetween i got this idea, which seemed kinda fun. Took me about an hour to decide to get out of bed and just make the thing.
In case you wonder, i dont write all the code myself, simply adapt whats already out there.
